President's Message
October 2009

(OK, a hot, humid Cabo, but a GREAT BEACH, nonetheless!)  For those who didn’t, You missed a great trip.  We started with a program and a photo session with Michael Van Aucken, and then we were turned loose to practice our skills with twelve of the cabaret dancers from the cruise ship as models!  Hopefully we will see some of those images in upcoming print competitions!?!

The second full day was spent anchored in the Cabo San Lucas Bay.  I for one spent the entire day on a beach chair, reading, socializing, and jumping in and out of the ocean.  Very relaxing!

The evening featured a program by Peg Jackson.   Many people spent the second day in Cabo shopping, eating, relaxing or photographing.

Our return trip at sea featured a photoshop class from Suzzette Allen, who provided students with a CD of actions, brushes, and other fantastic goodies (worth the price of admission all by itself)!  We finished our photographic activities with a slide show and very constructive group critique of the images created during the trip.  A great time was had by all.

As the cruise was so successful, plans are now in the works for another PPSV educational cruise next year to Alaska.  Details will follow, please stay tuned.

For those who did go on the cruise, the organizers would greatly appreciate feedback on what went right, what could be improved, and what else you might want to have included next year.  Please write down your comments, and send or give them to me, Sandra Harris, or Don Benson.

Looking to the present, the fall season also means PPSV must nominate members to fill our board of directors positions.  Elections are held at our November meeting for the following year.  Executive officers serve for one year, and board members serve a two year term.  Our association is only as strong as our members, and those who give to it.  I would add that those who give of themselves to the association ALWAYS benefit the most from it.  If you wish to participate more directly, please talk with me, or any board member.  Our association both wants and needs your input.  The time commitments are not very large, and your reward will be great.

Looking to the future, next year is coming quickly.  Have you started planning yet?  A great place to start might be making a reservation for a convention.  There is nothing like a great conference to get your creative juices flowing, and your business growing in new directions!  I ALWAYS get new ideas and inspiration for making my business better when I go to a convention.  Plan now to attend at least one convention this coming year.

Potential events include SPA (Senior Portrait Artists, San Diego, Jan 4-6), Imaging USA (Professional Photographers of America, Nashville TN, Jan 10-12), Pro Photo Expo (Professional Photographers of California, Pasadena, Feb 6-8),  and WPPI (Wedding and Portrait Photographers International, Las Vegas, March 4-11.  Some are close, some give you the opportunity to travel, ALL give you a great learning experience.  Remember, if you aren’t improving, the competition is passing you by!

Welcome to Fall.  It is a busy time of year for photographers.  The holiday portrait season in upon us, the conference season is only a few months away, and we are always dealing with the day to day operations of our businesses.  On that note, have you filed your 3rd quarter sales tax forms?

Let’s take a look back.  Did you go on the PPSV Cruise to sunny Cabo San Lucas?
